Pilates Teacher Training - Program Details

Balanced Body University offers a full range of Pilates instructor certification programs. Whether you are interested in teaching Mat classes, Reformer classes or Pilates personal training sessions on the Reformer, Trap Table, Chair and Barrels, they have the resources that                                                              you need to succeed.

The BBU Pilates instructor training program is designed to create thoughtful, creative and successful Pilates teachers. Our curriculum emphasizes the principles underlying each exercise. Our faculty members have a wide variety of Pilates backgrounds from classical to contemporary to fitness and bring their exceptional depth of experience to the training.

Our program is designed in modules so you can take your first course now and continue your training next week, next month or next year. Each module is self contained so you can take them as quickly or as slowly as your schedule and budget allow.

Prerequisites: Anatomy and Pilates Movement Principles

In order to be the best Pilates instructor you can be, a solid foundation in Anatomy and in the principles of Pilates are required. The following courses are offered for students who do not have the appropriate background or who join the program after Mat 1. Not all students will be required to take these courses.

Balanced Body University Introduction to Anatomy (12 hours)

Strongly recommended for Mat 1 & 2
Required for Reformer and Apparatus courses
BBU Anatomy includes an introduction to the key elements of the musculoskeletal system including the bones, joint structure and function, and the primary muscles involved in movement. BBU Anatomy is specifically geared toward Pilates and movement teachers and includes practical exercises on the functions of the muscles and joints allowing you to embody the information more effectively. BBU Anatomy may be taught using traditional methods or as an Anatomy in Clay™ workshop depending on the resources of the host studio.

Balanced Body University Pilates Movement Principles (2 hours)

Included in Mat 1 & 2
Required for students starting the program after Mat 1
Pilates Movement Principles introduces you to the biomechanical foundation of the Pilates method and to the essential components of functional core strength, lumbopelvic and scapular stability, as well as assessing and correcting alignment and improving flexibility. Pre-Pilates exercises are included for teaching these key principles to your clients and classes. This course is strongly recommended for students who do not take their Mat training through BBU or who are starting their training with Reformer 1.

 

Pilates Mat Certification Program

Modules: Mat I and Mat II

The BBU Pilates Mat certification includes the complete Pilates Mat repertoire as well as an introduction to the movement principles that make Pilates such a successful exercise program. Modifications and variations are included to help you successfully teach a wide range of clients. BBU Pilates Mat certification will empower you to become a successful, creative and transformative Pilates teacher.

Our Mat certification program includes:

Mat I (16 hours)
Introduction to Pilates & Beginning/Intermediate Exercises

Prerequisites: 3 years experience teaching movement, anatomy, 20 Pilates Mat class sessions

Mat I includes an introduction to the history and principles of Pilates, beginning and most intermediate level exercises with modifications, lectures on class order and programming in a group setting, and guidelines for teaching seniors, pre-, and post-natal classes.

Mat II (16 hours)
Intermediate/Advanced Exercises

Prerequisites: Mat I

Mat II includes the remaining intermediate and advanced level exercises as well as essential movement principles and training tips for advancing clients to the higher levels. Pilates for sports specific activities are also covered.

BBU Pilates Mat Instructor Certification

Requirements for Completion

To become a fully qualified Balanced Body University Mat Instructor, students must complete the following:

Total hours for completion of Mat program: 102 hours (not including anatomy)

Upon completion of all of the requirements, a certificate of completion as a Balanced Body University Mat Instructor will be issued. Note: The final practical exam for the Mat training is included in the Module 2 unless separate arrangements are made.

Pilates Reformer Certification Program

Modules: Reformer I, Reformer II, Reformer III

The Pilates Reformer is an extraordinarily flexible piece of exercise equipment allowing resistance and support for exercises involving every part of the body. Our program gives you a thorough understanding of how to use the Reformer to develop core and extremity strength, stability, flexibility, coordination and balance. The wide range of exercises provides a stimulating workout for clients at any level of ability.

Our Reformer certification program includes:

Reformer I (18 hours)
Introduction to Reformer & Beginning Exercises and Pilates Principles

Prerequisites: 3 years experience teaching movement, anatomy, 30 Pilates Reformer classes or personal training sessions

Reformer I includes an introduction to the Pilates Reformer including set up and safety, plus beginning exercises, program sequencing and teaching tips for group classes. By the end of the course you will be able to teach a beginning Reformer class or personal training session.

Reformer II (16 hours)
Intermediate Exercises

Prerequisites: Reformer I

Reformer II includes intermediate exercises and modifications designed for group and individual instruction. Teaching successful classes and sessions to clients at different levels of ability is emphasized. Included are a variety of programs designed to keep your clients inspired.
